Confirm the Particular Sailing
If your final planned crossing is cancelled, first identify the operator, direction, sailing time and ticket type. Reopen that operator’s service notice rather than relying on a general wind forecast or an alert for the other ferry company. Steamship Authority’s Current Status page separates Nantucket trips from Vineyard trips and distinguishes high-speed from vehicle-and-passenger sailings. Hy-Line posts Travel Alerts on its website. This is a recovery guide checked November 2, 2026, not a report that a particular sailing has been cancelled today.
Keep the booking reference, unused ticket and any cancellation message together. Before buying a second ticket, find out what will happen to the first booking. A sailing on a timetable, an open-ended ticket and an actual confirmed seat are three different things.
Hy-Line: Open-Ended Does Not Mean Automatically Rebooked
Hy-Line’s ferry FAQ says that when it cancels a sailing, reservations are moved to open-ended status so passengers can rebook another departure. A refund requires speaking with an agent: call 800-492-8082 or 508-778-0404. Ask for the new departure confirmation if you still want to travel, or for the refund process if you do not. An open-ended booking does not select the next morning’s boat for you.
The operator separately publishes rules for a customer voluntarily cancelling or missing a sailing. Explain that the operator cancelled your trip so the agent can apply the relevant process. Hy-Line carries passengers rather than cars; switching to it cannot solve the transport of a vehicle waiting on Nantucket. Its Nantucket ticket office is at 34 Straight Wharf. Confirm another departure’s status and space before changing terminals or buying replacement travel.
Steamship Authority: Match the Request to the Ticket
Steamship Authority’s FAQ says customers with reservations on cancelled trips may make new reservations or travel standby when service resumes. That gives you options to discuss, not a guaranteed place on the first boat. Its reservation office is 508-477-8600; high-speed passenger reservations use 508-495-3278. Published reservation-office hours are 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. daily, excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Nantucket terminal at 1 Steamboat Wharf has a separate information number, 508-228-0262; the contact page says ticket-office telephone numbers do not take reservations. Reservation changes and cancellations are not accepted by email.
For a refund enquiry, identify whether you hold a traditional passenger ticket, high-speed reservation or vehicle reservation. The currently linked passenger-ticket policy permits refunds of unused passenger fares within two years of purchase, subject to returning issued tickets, and identifies a wallet route for eFerry refunds. Vehicle and high-speed reservations have separate conditions. Ask the agent how an operator-cancelled trip affects yours before applying an ordinary advance-cancellation deadline. Keep any replacement booking or refund acknowledgement.
Arrange the Overnight Stay Directly
If no usable crossing remains, start checking a room while resolving the ticket. Nantucket Visitor Services provides lodging referrals, including one-night vacancies, but describes itself as an information service rather than a booking agency. Its number is 508-228-0925. The town page’s posted late-fall office hours are Monday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays. It cannot be assumed to be answering after the last evening ferry.
On November 2, the availability list visible on that page was labelled October 26–November 1. That expired range is a reason to call an establishment, not evidence that any listed room is free tonight. Confirm the actual night, price, check-in deadline, access needs, pets, transport from the dock and the property’s cancellation terms directly. If you are stranded in Hyannis instead, check a mainland room; an island room does not solve that journey. Do not assume a ferry ticket includes a hotel, a terminal permits overnight waiting, or a new room booking can be refunded if the boat resumes.
Rebuild Tomorrow From the Dock Outward
Before ending the evening, write down the next confirmed sailing, the correct terminal and the operator’s check-in instructions. If you are travelling with a vehicle, settle that booking explicitly; a passenger place is not vehicle space. Check how you will get from the room to the terminal and from Hyannis to the parked car, bus or onward appointment. The WAVE route pages are a starting point for island transit, but a daytime route listing does not establish an early-morning pickup. Ask about the date, stop, direction and first useful service.
Tell the accommodation and any onward transport provider that your arrival has changed, and ask what options apply to your own booking. Before leaving the room, check the ferry’s live status again. A new reservation settles the booking question; the operator still determines whether that crossing runs. Keep essential medication, chargers and the next day’s documents with you while making these arrangements.
