Choose the Service Before Choosing a Pickup Time
CCRTA’s DART is an advance-booked, shared, door-to-door service for Cape Cod residents and visitors, for any trip purpose. The operator lists Monday–Saturday service across all 15 Cape towns and limited Sunday service; town-specific times must be checked with the call center. SmartDART is a different, on-demand service with geographic limits. A fixed route follows a published corridor and timetable. The useful choice depends on both addresses, the travel day and the return leg, rather than whether a bus appears somewhere on a town map.
When SmartDART Fits—and When To Ask About DART
SmartDART is available in every Cape town, but its page limits journeys to the listed zone or, outside a zone, the same town. Barnstable–Yarmouth and Yarmouth–Dennis are the two named zones. An Orleans pickup and an Eastham destination therefore are not a single within-town SmartDART journey. Ask CCRTA whether DART can accommodate those exact addresses, or compare a fixed-route trip with any necessary local connection. Do not assume the two SmartDART zones create an unrestricted ride across the Cape.
SmartDART requests use its app; SmartACCESS, 508-418-3278, is the operator’s phone-booking and app-help route. DART reservations use 800-352-7155. Keeping those numbers attached to the service name avoids requesting an advance DART appointment through the wrong channel.
Put the DART Deadline in Your Calendar
The reservation office accepts calls Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. For Tuesday–Saturday travel, reserve by noon on the preceding weekday. A Monday trip must be booked by 5 p.m. the previous Friday; that Friday deadline also applies to Tuesday when Monday is a holiday. CCRTA permits booking up to one month ahead and does not permit same-day DART reservations or changes. For limited Sunday service, ask the call center about the available trip and the Friday deadline shown on the main DART page.
The dedicated reservation page’s opening instruction requires at least one weekday’s notice. Read the specific weekday cutoff, rather than assuming that “a day ahead” includes a weekend. The operator’s holiday list includes Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas as days when DART does not operate. SmartDART also lists no service on those holidays; an app is not a holiday-service exception.
A Booking Worksheet for an Orleans–Eastham Errand
Suppose you need to reach an Eastham address from Orleans on a Wednesday. Before noon Tuesday, call with the full pickup and destination addresses, Wednesday’s required arrival time, a contact number and a proposed return time. Ask the dispatcher to confirm that both trips can be accommodated and to state the pickup arrangements. This is an example of what to request, not a confirmed itinerary or a promise that a particular appointment time can be served.
Explain any entrance, ramp or boarding requirement while booking. CCRTA says drivers assist to and from the first-floor outside door, cannot enter the home and must remain within sight of the vehicle. Wheelchair users need accessible pickup and drop-off locations; drivers cannot negotiate steps. A narrow doorway or stairs at the destination needs resolving before the ride, even when the vehicle has suitable access.
Write down the confirmed outbound and return details separately. CCRTA tells passengers with appointments to be ready roughly one to one-and-a-half hours before the requested arrival time. Ask how that requirement applies to your booking, and do not plan a shared ride as though it were a private, direct taxi.
Check the Fare and Keep the Return Booking Usable
CCRTA’s current fare page lists a $3 standard one-way DART fare and a $1.50 reduced fare for eligible riders. Confirm eligibility and payment when booking; the DART instructions require exact fare when paying the driver. SmartDART’s listed fare is $3 per ride with cashless payment. The operator currently lists fixed routes as free. A free fixed route does not make DART or SmartDART free.
If plans change, cancel promptly at 800-352-7155; the cancellation answering service operates around the clock. The no-show policy treats cancellation after 5 p.m. the evening before pickup as late, and warns that a missed outward pickup can cancel the day’s remaining trips. Call if you still need the return. An uncertain finish time is a reason to discuss the return before booking, not to rely on an unarranged same-day change.
