Select Board confirmation comes with a contract condition

Provincetown has selected Acting Fire Chief Othaine Rance to become the town’s first full-time fire chief. The October 27 announcement says the Select Board confirmed the appointment at its October 26 meeting, following Town Manager Alex Morse’s selection. Successful contract negotiations remain a condition.

That distinction matters when reading the headline: the town has announced its choice, but the notice does not establish a signed contract or a completed swearing-in ceremony.

A leader already familiar with the department

According to the town, Rance began in Provincetown as a call firefighter and became acting chief in March 2026. His experience also includes work in the Dennis and Yarmouth fire departments. The selection followed a committee search and interviews with three finalists.

The announcement describes him as a Massachusetts-certified paramedic with fire-service leadership and instruction training. It says details of a public swearing-in and opportunities to meet the chief will be announced later. No ceremony date is given.

The charter explains the appointment process

A state act approved January 22, 2026, amended Provincetown’s charter. Its fire-department section provides for appointment of the chief by the town manager with Select Board approval, followed by a contract setting out the position’s responsibilities and terms. It also assigns oversight of the town’s emergency medical services to the chief.

That published structure helps explain why the announcement contains both a board decision and a remaining contract step. The next useful updates for residents are confirmation of those arrangements and the promised public event details.
