Relief for businesses behind the detours

Temporary signs can remain in place longer for businesses affected by Yarmouth’s wastewater construction. The Select Board approved a time-limit waiver through June 1, 2027 for the work zone running from Forest Road to the Barnstable boundary, according to the town’s October 28 account of its October 27 meeting.

The decision responds to the disruption facing businesses along the construction corridor. It gives them a longer period to use permitted temporary signs while customers navigate the work.

Permits remain part of the process

The October 22 staff memo behind the decision describes the usual allowance as fourteen consecutive days, with one renewal. Staff recommended removing that time restriction during the extended detours so businesses would not need repeated renewals.

The same memo says signs must still receive Building Department permits and comply with the rest of the sign bylaw. A business planning a new sign should therefore check its proposed placement and design with the department, even though the time restriction has been waived.

This week’s road notice explains the need

For November 2–6, the town lists two Route 28 closures: between Parker’s River Landing and Courtland Way, and at Chase Brook Park. Its October 30 update provides separate detours for the two locations, with the work window listed as Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.

Customers should use that dated notice and the wastewater project’s traffic maps to plan a specific trip. The sign decision changes a business communication rule; the road notice remains the source for the week’s access arrangements.
