The September payroll estimate
The Barnstable Town metropolitan area had an estimated 103,400 nonfarm payroll jobs in September 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics table reviewed for this briefing. BLS marks the September estimate preliminary and reports 111,100 jobs for August. Those figures are not seasonally adjusted. The Massachusetts Department of Economic Research’s October 20 local labor-market release puts the monthly decline at 6.9 percent.
The same state release reports that the area had 2 percent more payroll jobs than in September 2025. Together, the comparisons show a contraction from late summer alongside a gain against the equivalent month a year earlier.
Why both comparisons matter
A monthly change answers a different question from an annual one. September versus August measures movement across two adjacent months; September versus the previous September compares the same point in the calendar. The state cautions that its unadjusted local estimates reflect seasonal fluctuations. That makes the adjustment label essential when reading a Cape economy headline.
The figures alone do not establish why an employer changed staffing, whether a particular shop is doing well, or what will happen next month. A monthly decline also does not cancel out an annual gain: the two percentages use different starting points.
Keep the unemployment month separate
On the BLS page checked on October 24 Eastern time, the latest populated unemployment-rate cell was August 2026: a preliminary 3.8 percent, also not seasonally adjusted. The September unemployment cell was blank. It would be misleading to attach that August rate to the September payroll estimate.
The page describes the Barnstable Town metropolitan area. It should not be read as a statistic limited to the municipal government’s workforce or as a combined estimate for Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
What to look for in the next release
When the tables update, check the reference month, geography, adjustment label and preliminary marker together. Revisions may change previously published estimates. Keep a dated copy when comparing releases, and compare like with like: a local unadjusted series and a statewide seasonally adjusted series answer different questions. The linked state release and federal table provide those labels alongside the numbers.
