Two planned connections
Barnstable County commissioners voted unanimously on November 4, 2026, that two proposed railroad crossings in Bourne meet the public-necessity requirement. The county reported the decision on November 6.
The Mid-Cape Connector and Keith Field crossings would link Sandwich Road with the South Canal Service Road for people walking or cycling. Planned safeguards include automated gates, warning lights and accessible crossing surfaces.
Construction is still ahead
MassDOT anticipates starting crossing work in 2027. The connections would support detours around a section of canal path during Sagamore Bridge construction and are expected to remain afterward.
This decision advances the proposals; it is not a notice that the paths are built or that a canal closure has begun.
