Two dates for public input
Chatham will present its draft Open Space and Recreation Plan on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eastern time at the Community Center, 702 Main Street. The town’s flyer sets November 12 as the close of the public comment period.
Residents can use the November 5 session to discuss the draft, then follow up during the remaining comment window. Questions and comments can be directed to Town Planner Christine A. O’Grady at cogrady@chatham-ma.gov. The project webpage links the draft and a separate ten-year action plan.
Access and maintenance are specific priorities
The action plan proposes better pedestrian and bicycle connections to parks, beaches, conservation land, the Old Colony Rail Trail and the Fish Pier. It also identifies improvements to public access, parking and wayfinding at waterfront locations.
Other proposed work includes beach and recreation accessibility, restroom repairs, trail maintenance and playground improvements at Judy Lane and Veterans Field. These are planning proposals. The document describes its funding sources as possibilities rather than committed money, and says implementation can change with funding, permitting and partnerships.
Residents reviewing the draft can point to a particular route, facility or access problem and explain which proposed action would address it.
Why the plan matters beyond this meeting
The town explains that an approved open-space plan supports eligibility to apply for grant programs administered by the state’s Division of Conservation Services. It also helps coordinate land-acquisition work with environmental agencies and land trusts.
That makes this comment period an opportunity to influence the priorities used in later project and funding decisions. Approval of the planning document would not itself establish that every listed improvement has a construction budget or start date.
