A November deadline for local project ideas
Orleans residents, nonprofits and town departments have until Monday, November 23, 2026, to apply for Fiscal Year 2028 Community Preservation Act funding. The town’s September 23 announcement remains posted as November begins, giving project organizers a clear deadline for turning an idea into a proposal.
The four funding areas are open space, historic preservation, community housing and recreation. Applications go through the town’s OpenGov portal. Registration is free, and the notice says an existing OpenGov login from another Massachusetts town can be used.
An application begins a review process
The Community Preservation Committee’s own description explains its role: it evaluates proposals against local needs and town plans, then recommends projects and allocations to Town Meeting. The committee has nine members and serves in an advisory capacity. A submission or committee recommendation therefore should not be described as an award.
For a small neighborhood group, the useful first step is to identify the public benefit of the proposed work and which funding category it fits. Keep that description specific enough that a reviewer can understand what would change, where it would happen and whom it would serve.
Read the project guidance before submitting
The town directs applicants to its selection guidelines and Community Preservation Plan. Nonprofits pursuing historic preservation funding are asked to obtain the Orleans Historical Commission’s opinion first. That additional step deserves attention before the deadline approaches.
Use the committee page below for guidance, contact information and meeting records, and the official application link in the town’s announcement to submit. Check the portal early so an account or document question does not become a last-day problem. This is an application opportunity for local projects; the notice does not guarantee that a proposal will receive funding.
